The memory of Angel Juarbe, Jr., a firefighter who lost his life in the World Trade Center tragedy, will never be forgotten in his home neighborhood of Mott Haven.

At 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, Wales Avenue from East 149th to East 147th streets, the block where Juarbe grew up, will be renamed Firefighter Angel Luis Juarbe, Jr. Avenue.

Councilman Jose Serrano, who organized the event, said he is proud to honor an American hero from the Bronx. "Firefighter Juarbe gave his life on September 11, 2001 in heroic service to his city and nation at the World Trade Center," Serrano said. "His strength and valor are attributes that our youth should be encouraged to strive for in any path that they choose to enter into. When young people look up at that street sign, they will be reminded of a neighborhood person who is a hero to his people."

Not only a hero, Juarbe was also a reality television star, having garnered national attention for his role on the FOX TV show "Murder in Small Town X." Juarbe solved the murder and won a new Jeep along with $250,000. The final episode featuring Juarbe aired just two weeks before the WTC tragedy.

Juarbe, 35, was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School. He joined the New York City Fire Department eight years ago. Despite recent changes in his life, Juarbe, a moonlighting model, had not changed, family and friends recalled.

Juarbe’s uncle Manny Gonzalez remembers Angel fondly. "He was a good kid who played football with the youngsters on the block. He was adventurous and on his way up with a lot to look forward to," he said.

Juarbe’s brother, Charlie, remembers Angel as "a fun person, a leader…he was intelligent and a real sweetheart." Recalling September 11, Charlie said "Angel was on the phone with his command and the alarm went off. He jumped on the truck and just went. That was it."

Angel Juarbe is survived by parents Angel and Miriam; brothers Charlie and Edgar; sisters Susan and Jessica; as well as a cousin Vanessa.
